"Surfboard Essentials, 2008"
A series of surfboard seminars led by Lanny Shuler

In his first surfboard seminar of the 2008 series, Lanny Shuler will reflect on new surfboard trends and developments, as well as a variety of very practical interests for all surfers, from beginners to experts.
Topics will include:

  • select the best design for your next board
  • care for your board and how to make simple repairs
  • explore the full potential of your board and improve its performance
  • environmental impact of materials
  • new trends from hobbyists to international industry: shapes, fins and materials
Lanny Shuler's fascination with the design of surf craft began at the age of 5 when he learned to build and ride skimboards for wake-surfing behind his dad's ski-boat. He began conventional ocean surfing with surfboards at the age of 7. Enthralled with exploring different surfboard designs, he repaired and modified surfboards and fins for all the local gang, with his primary reward being access to ride and compare those surfboard's differences. Soon he began to design and build new surfboards, making them professionally in 1968 at the age of 17. Now having surfed for fifty years, he has designed and built many thousands of surfboards and sailboards along the way. In addition to building custom surfboards, in recent years he has begun to consult to large composite companies working to engineer new materials for better surfboards. He remains fascinated with the creativity and science of it all and is increasingly excited at the opportunity to share the adventure with others.
